The DeKalb County Home Renovation Dumpster Guide
From a single-room refresh to a whole-house remodel, here's how to plan your dumpster like a pro.

A renovation runs smoother when debris never becomes the bottleneck. The trick is planning your dumpster around the shape of your project — the right size, in the right spot, swapped at the right time. Here's how DeKalb County homeowners and remodelers keep the debris side of a renovation effortless.
Start with the scope
Before you can size a bin, be honest about scope. A cosmetic refresh — paint, fixtures, some flooring — throws off surprisingly little debris. A gut renovation that takes rooms back to the studs produces several times more. Walk the project and picture what's actually leaving the house: cabinets, drywall, flooring, tile, fixtures, and the packaging from everything new coming in.
Size by project type
- Single bathroom: 10–15 yard
- Kitchen remodel: 15–20 yard
- Multiple rooms / flooring throughout: 20 yard
- Whole-home remodel or addition: 30 yard, sometimes with a swap
- Basement finish: 15–20 yard
If your renovation spans weeks, a single larger bin you fill gradually often beats juggling multiple small ones.
Think about placement early
The best spot is a driveway close to the main debris exit — usually a side or back door for interior work. Boards go down to protect the surface. Many DeKalb neighborhoods have older, narrower driveways and mature trees, so if access is tight, tell us when you book and we'll bring the right size and plan the drop. Keeping the bin on private property also sidesteps the right-of-way permit — worth remembering given DeKalb's city-vs-unincorporated setup.
Renovating an older DeKalb home
DeKalb has a lot of established housing — mid-century ranches, in-town bungalows near Decatur, and older homes across the county. Two things to plan for: pre-1980 structures should be checked for asbestos before demolition, and older plaster-and-lath walls produce heavy, dense debris that fills a bin by weight faster than modern drywall. We'll factor both into the size we recommend.
Plan the swap on big jobs
For whole-home projects, don't wait until the bin is overflowing to think about a swap. A quick call and we'll pull the full one and drop an empty, usually same-day, so your crew never stops for debris.

What size dumpster for a basement finish?
Most basement finishes fit a 15 or 20-yard bin. If you're gutting an existing finished basement first, lean toward the 20 or plan a swap.
Where should I put the dumpster during a renovation?
On your driveway, as close to the main debris exit as possible, with boards down. Keeping it on private property also avoids a right-of-way permit.
Can I swap the bin partway through a long renovation?
Yes. On bigger jobs we'll pull a full bin and drop an empty — usually same-day — so debris never holds up the work.
